I am using a Windows 2000 machine in a network environment.

I installed the Primo PDF driver

opened reader, and completed a form and went to print and no longer had ANY printers.

no PrimoPDF
no Distiller or PDF writer
no Lexmark network printer

nada

and when I tried to re-add the printers, I get an error saying that it cannot add preinters due to lack of resources and that the print subsytem is unavailable.

I don't have any printers in any programs at all

I got my regular printers back after rebooting, but I am not getting any PRimo PDF as a printer choice.

and I can't seem to get it via add printer

The reason you had none, is that the print spooler service seemed to have stopped. Restarting your machine restarts this service. It sounds like the PrimoPDF printer was not installed due to this as well. If you follow the same steps for a manual install can you install a printer for the PrimoPDF port?

I tried to add the PrimoPDF printer through the Start|Settings|add printer

but didn't have a PrimoPDF printer port

In your program files\activepdf\primopdf folder there should be an exe called portinstall. Run that and tell me the return codes that you see.

should be

3005 - monitor exists
3006 - port exists
0 - Copy driver files
1802 - Printer exists

although 0s on any of those are ok, just means it completed the step.

I ran the port install - but the DOS window fluttered open and closed so fast that I could barely register it opened.

I tried to re-run it again so I could do a print screen snap shot, but I can't get the image fast enough.

I went back to the Start...|Printer and there appears to be a new port called "local port" on my list, but when I try to manually add a printer, I get the manufacturer's list of harward printers.

What user context are you doing this under?

We just finished up with a new installer So that's heading through QA, hopefully that will take care of most of these issues.

I am logged in as a user, not an admin, but I have install rights, which general user's do not.

I also can't uninstall, it refers me to a missing dll, which is not int he active PDf directory as the cause.

My LAN admin helped me get these codes from the printerport exe thingy:

Add Print Processor Err: 3005
Add Port Monitor Err: 3006
Source: C:\Program Files\activepdf\PrimoPDF\Dependents\pscript5.dll
Dest: C:\WINNT\System32\spool\DRIVERS\W32X86\pscript5.dl l
Copy Files: 80
Create Print Driver Err: 0
Add Printer Err: 1802

He also confirmed that my user account has full admin rights to install software.

how long does the Q&A process take?

Still haven't quite finished with the new installer, but it's close. The response you're seeing is totally correct. Here's the breakdown.

3005 - Print processor already exists, meaning we can use it
3006 - Print monitor exists and is ready to watch the created port
80 - means correct driver files already exist in the spool directory and we're ready to create a printer from them

0 means that the driver was successfully created

and lastly

1802 means the printer already exists! So that means you should have a PrimoPDF printer because it was created.

If you do not, try going into services and restarting the print spooler service (or simply restart the machine) But overall it sounds like the printer was installed on the system, as those returns are windows system return that provide feedback of the process. You can verify this information here:

On my recommendation, our most excellent systems IT administrator just spent a frustrating hour trying to make PrimoPDF work on our boss's computer. Every time he tried to print, nothing happened, except--according to him--he accessed a message saying that if we wanted to print we would have to pay $129.00.

Needless to say, he uninstalled.

I may try PrimoPDF at home, but I have to say that this is very discouraging. He did find another PDF creator PDF995 which worked to our boss's satisfaction, so I don't think I'm going to get him to retry.

It doesn't worry me so much that this experiment failed. What concerns me is that Active PDF will probably be struck from our list of valuable tools.

It's working okay on my computer now.

I have the install rights, I installed, lost all my printers. rebooted and got them and not PRIMO PDF, my LAN Admin came in and only got the portinstall report - didn't tweak anything else.

and the day after, PrimoPDF showed up like it was there all the time.

Although, I am not having an issue with some files in WP9 - I can't seem to use the "Publish to PDF" built in feature in WP.

but I can PDF by printing to either Primo or Acrobat (I have Acrobat Pro 6.0 on my computer - I'm testing Primo as a PDF solution for our staff to use as a cheaper alt to full blown Acrobat.

Wow, I'm sorry you had such a bad experience with Primo. However, I can assure that NOWHERE is there any kind of screen asking for any amount of money for use! PrimoPDF is 100% free with no stipulations. Could you give me some information on the system your boss is running as I would be more than happy to help you with any problems that you may have?

might they have downloaded the trial versions of either activePDF Composer or activePDF Maestro ?

and not PrimoPDF?

I'm not really sure, none of our products are that price. Maestro is $25 and Composer is $79 not sure where he could have possibly gotten that.

I have had some of the same issues that have been stated previously. I am running Win 98 and I get the Error:2185 message in a dos window during install. I tried to find the Primomon95.dll file to rename and place in my win32 folder, but I do not have one. I also ran the PortInstall.exe and took a screen shot of the dos window that displayed and it gave me the following errors:

Add Print Processor Err: 87
Add Port Monitor Err: 1805
Source: C:\Program Files\activepdf\PrimoPDF\Dependents\pscript5.dll
Dest: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\pscript5.dll
Copy Files: 80
Create Print Driver Err: 0
Add Printer Err: 120

I know that you are getting close to finishing a new installation process for Win 98, but is there anything I can do in the mean time to use this product. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks.

Wow, those are some odd returns for those calls. Sounds like you have inproper permissions during the install. I just finished up with the new installer and it's looking pretty good. Hang tight for a few days while it goes through QA and it will be out. In the meantime try uninstalling and reinstalling while logged in as LOCAL admin.

I am looking forward to seeing the new installer. Thanks for the response.
