View Full Version : Running Under Vista

Some of you may find that using Primo PDF under Vista produces blank documents (0kb).
This is because Vista's User Account Control system prevents unauthorised changes to the file system.
In order to use Primo PDF you must first deactivate the UAC - this requires a restart and can be very annoying if you want to keep UAC on and not have to restart everytime you want to use Primo PDF. However as far as I am aware there is no alternative.

You're right: the problem it's due to Vista's UAC; and as posted on another thread, PrimoPDF is trying to wite a temporary file to the C:\Program Files\activePDF\PrimoPDF folder (or wherever you installed PrimoPDF).
My workaround was to change the security permissions (right-click, select Properties, and go to the Security tab) for that folder (you'll need an account with administrative privileges to do this) and added each of the user accounts that where going to use PrimoPDF on that computer and give them Full control.
That takes care of the problem and I still have UAC for the rest of the system.

Brillo pads, that workaround works like a charm... Just what I needed! Thanks!

Just spotted your thread - exactly the problem I have posted this morning. What is UAC? What are the implications of turning it off?

Thanks for your tip - I did this but still got blank page 0KB file. I checked properties/security that changes were still there and was OK. Any other suggestions please?

Just to confirm that, in order to get this to work, I only had to give the "users" group on the machine modify permissions to the C:\Program Files\activePDF\PrimoPDF folder.
Haven't tested that with an account that's not a local administrator yet.
Might help if future incarnations used the TEMP environment variable to store intermediate files.

Great post ... just not working for me.
I have changed the user group permissions to full control and still get 0kb blank PDF's.
When that did not work I added full control permissions for my specific profile (local admin rights). Same result ... 0kb blank PDF's.
At first I did this with the older 2.0 version and tried it again today with the newer 3.0 version (after uninstall 2.0).
Any other ideas or suggestions? Are there settings that can be changed for the UAC rather than turn it off completely?
Thanks

I don't know how much help this comment is, but it worked for me without resetting any permissions. Although I did already have UAC off (I hate it). Primo lets me save my new pdfs in any location.

This is what I did to get primoPDF 3.0 working on Vista Home Premium.
1. Install the software
2. Go to C:\Program Files
3. Then Right Click on 'activePDF', Click on properties
4. Click on the security tab
5. Click the Advanced button
6. Click on Edit
7. Click on Users, click edit
8. Click on Full Control, click OK
9. Check the box that says 'Replace all existing inheritable permission on all descendants with inheritable permissions from this object'
10. Click OK and then click yes to the warning dialog.
11. Click OK to get out of the Advanced Dialog, click OK to get out of the activePDF dialog
12. Print like you used to in XP

I followed all the steps, but when I open it, it is still gibberish. Something's wrong.
Anyway, thank you for the instructions. Please help!

Can you send a sample file so I can look at what is actually being printed?
This might actually be an issue with the default program associated with PDF files on your machine. Can you open other PDF files? If you can't I would recomend re-installing Adobe Reader.

Thank you for responding again. I will try to send a file like you suggested so you can analyze it. I have to go out of the country on business today so I will try to do that in a few days. Thank you again for your offer. It's greatly appreciated.
I did reinstall it, at least once. I had had the problem with blank documents opening (like some other posters), then I uninstalled and reinstalled it, and now when I try to open it, the file says PDF file, but when the doc is opened, it is Word Pad, and gibberish.
I will send you the files as soon as I am able. Have a great rest of the week.

Are you using the 32 or 64 bits version of Windows Vista?
I'm using 64 bits, all the recomendations i saw in here are done, and it don't work yet.
Correction:
Some time we are very stupid, i change the definitions of other user, and not mine. Corrected, and working ... it's OK!

I too have problems with creating pdf using Vista Home Premium. Read all threads and tried TrilogyNet Corp's clear solution. Still no joy - what I get is an Adobe Acrobat reader 8 icon. When I try to open the icon the following message appears: "Adobe Reader could not open 'name.pdf because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded)"
I've tried acouple of different Excel documents but they all do the same.
Any advice much appreciated :)

Using Vista Home Premium - I tried all the grant user permissions suggestions, and nothing worked for me either. However, I did get the app to work by installing it in MyDocuments. I just created a separate folder for it, and changed the default location during install to point to that folder instead of Program Files... Not sure if this is applicable to folks with multiple users, but if you are the only person on your machine, it is worth a try. The app still doesn't open my default pdf viewer (Adobe) when it is done creating the pdf file.

I am using Vista Home Basic and still experience the same problem after trying the suggested fix. What I found was that although I checked the box to "Replace all existing..." and then clicked on either "OK" or "Apply", it never got saved that way. When I went back to verify my selection, somehow it was unchecked again. Is Windows security not allowing this option?
