As is, PrimoPDF automatically names the new PDF by putting in the name of the source application followed by an often truncated version of the source filename (example: Microsoft Word - myfilenam). I've seen other complaints in these forums about this.
It would really save a lot of time if we could choose the default file name format. I can tell what the source for my PDFs is by where I save them so having the source included in the file name is both unnecessary and, since I have to change the default PDF file name EVERYTIME, annoying. Besides, the name of the source can be embedded in the document anyway. An option in the settings screens that allows one to choose between including or not including the source in the file name would be a user friendly way to do this. An even better way would be to have an option in the settings screen with two choices that could either be checked or left unchecked allowing one to choose either to place the source in the title or embedded in the file info, both or neither. This way one wouldn't have to horse with it everytime.
It would also be nice if the default maximum length of a default file name could be user selected so it wouldn't be necessary to go into a separate screen to complete a truncated filename. Making the field that shows the filepath of the PDF file destination larger would avoid the need to scroll the existing field or opening a new window to ensure the new PDF is being saved to the correct folder, thus saving the user a considerable amount of time. One of PrimoPDF's best features is it's speed and cutting the need for user intervention would improve even that feature. I would like to keep the existing window that shows the contents of the destination folder since I frequently need to replace an existing PDF with a "new, improved" version. It's so much easier to double click on the existing file to be replaced than to have to make sure the replacement filename was typed exactly the same as the new one.
Two complaints I have for the next best free PDF converion program I've used, CutePDF, has to do with speed and showing what processes are occurring on screen. Primo PDF is much faster than CutePDF, period. CutePDF has large gaps in it's processes when nothing is showing on screen other than the source application, leaving the user wondering if the thing is even working. PrimoPDF is fast enough that such gaps are short enough to usually avoid this user paranoia. Every once in a while, though, my machine will get busy on something else and I will get a brief gap that sets off this annoying paranoia. It would be nice for us paranoid types if PrimoPDF would show someting onscreen, like the fake time barmeter so many programs use, that would show it hasn't crashed and is still working.
Another nice feature would be a section in the PDF manual explaining what each of the settings are and what each selection does (not all of us, especially me, are all that computer literate). That would eliminate a lot, if not most, of the complaints I see in these forums (assuming people would actually read the thing).
